V. Rubato, senza misura, molto

The old singer[1] is fishing. After he has filled his boat with fish he is ready to cook them, but one of them starts speaking. The talking fish is Aino, who disappeared in the sea so that she wouldn’t have to marry him. This is the first encounter of the two. Wainamoinen implores her to stay with him, but she goes back to the sea and is forever gone without explaining why. The dialog between the two characters is rendered in music through the alternation Lento – Agitato and the association of rhythmic formulae. The melodic line in the first beat reflects the movements of the fish in water; symmetrically, the last beat imitates the splash of the water after the fish has jumped out of the old man’s boat. [1] In our case old age stands for wisdom.

libretto:
"Oi sie vanha Väinämöinen!
En olluti minä tuleva
lohi leikkaellaksesi,
kala palstoin pannaksesi,
"Olimpa minä tuleva
kainaloiseksi kanaksi,
ikuiseksi istujaksi,
polviseksi puolisoksi,
"En ollut merilohia,
syvän aallon ahvenia:
olin kapo, neiti nuori,
sisar nuoren Joukahaisen,
kuta pyyit kuun ikäsi,
puhki polvesi halasit.
"Oi on sisar Joukahaisen!
Toki tullos toinen kerta!“

*

"Wainamoinen, ancient minstrel,
Do not think that I came hither
To be fished for as a salmon,
Only to be chopped in pieces.”
"Wherefore didst thou then come hither,
If it be not for my dinner?"
"Hither have I come, O minstrel,
In thine arms to rest and linger,
And thyself to love and cherish,
At thy side a life-companion,
And thy wife to be forever;
Deck thy couch with snowy linen,
Smooth thy head upon the pillow,
Sweep thy rooms and make them cheery,
Keep thy dwelling-place in order,
Build a fire for thee when needed”
“Since thou'rt Youkahainen's sister,
Beauteous Aino of Pohyola,
Come to me again I pray thee!"

*

“Eh, moşnege Väinämöinen,
nu eram de loc făcută
să fiu somn, să poţi să-l spinteci,
să-l despici în felioare“
“Pentru ce ai fost născută?”
“Pentru asta mă născusem:
să-ti fiu porumbiţă-n braţe,
să stau pururi lângă tine,
ca să-ti fiu nevastă-n viată,
ca să-ti pregătesc şi patul,
să-ti pun bine cele perne,
ca să-ţi vărui cămăruţa,
ca să-ţi mătur lungi podele
să-ţi duc focul în odaie.“
“Soră a lui Joukahainen,
mai întoarce-te o dată“

*

“Te vén vaksi Vejnemöjnen!
Bizony nem jöttem bárkádba
Hogy húsomat hasogassad,
Testem szeletekre szabjad...”
...
“Jöttem hozzád hitvesednek,
karodban kedves csibédnek,
holtig hűségesfelednek”
...
“Nem vagyok vizek lazaca
haragos hullámok hala,
hanem hajadon leányka,
Joukahajnen jámbor húga,
Az kit annyira kívántál,
Szívszakadva òhajtottál.”
“Joukahajnen jámbor húga,
térj meg hozzám még ez egyszer!”
